The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed that two separate road traffic accidents on Friday evening resulted in the deaths of 13 people.
In a statement, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), reported that the accidents took place in Masvingo and Gokwe.
“The ZRP confirms two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred this evening in Masvingo and Gokwe, with a total of 13 fatalities,” Nyathi stated.
The first accident occurred in Masvingo around 4:30 PM, involving a Chikozho bus traveling from Masvingo to Topora on the Masvingo-Zano road. The bus, carrying 105 passengers (75 seated and 30 standing), veered off the road while the driver was navigating a steep slope. The bus crashed into a rock and overturned, killing seven people instantly and injuring 98 others.
Of those injured, 65 were treated and discharged from Topora Clinic, while 33 individuals with more serious injuries were transported to Morgenster Hospital and Masvingo General Hospital for further medical attention.
The second accident occurred in Gokwe around 6:00 PM when a Nissan Sulphy struck a pothole at the 4-kilometer mark on the Gokwe-Siabuwa road. The driver lost control, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming Nissan AD van carrying nine occupants.
Six people, three from each vehicle, died at the scene. Eight others were injured, three critically and five with moderate injuries, and were taken to Gokwe General Hospital for treatment.
