In a historic ceremony held on August 15th, 2024, leaders from across Southern Africa gathered to mark the groundbreaking of the SADC Liberation Monument and Square. This ambitious project aims to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and independence throughout the region.
The SADC (Southern African Development Community) is a regional economic organization composed of 16 member states. The new monument and surrounding public square will serve as a symbol of the region’s long journey towards liberation from colonial rule and minority governments.
“This monument will stand as a testament to the courage and determination of our people,” stated the President of the SADC during the ceremony. “It will be a place for reflection, education, and inspiration for generations to come.”
The monument’s design features a striking central sculpture surrounded by smaller statues and memorials. The square will include landscaped gardens, educational exhibits, and spaces for public events and gatherings. Construction is expected to take 18-24 months to complete.
Once finished, the SADC Liberation Monument and Square will become a major tourist attraction and cultural hub in the heart of the region’s capital city. Leaders hope it will foster greater unity, pride, and understanding among the diverse people of Southern Africa.
“This is a proud moment for our region,” remarked the Secretary General of the SADC. “We are building a monument to our shared liberation struggle and the bright future that lies ahead.”
With the ceremonial groundbreaking completed, the hard work of turning this ambitious vision into reality can now begin in earnest.
